On the morning of December 71h, fire engines from the Honolulu Fire Department Central responded to a call to assist besieged firefighters at Hickam Field. Twenty-one firefighters from Kalihi and Palama Stations responded. Among them was Hose man Harry T L. Pang from the Kalihi Station. Fireman Pang died outside one of the hangers in a burst of machine gun fire from an attacking Japanese plane.

On December 7, 1984, as part of the annual Pearl Harbor commemoration, a Purple Heart was given to his son, Phillip Pang, 43 years after he had lost his father.
