Berton Burns Testimonials: Dad was stationed at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked. He had just graduated from Texas A&M, entered the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Reserve and then completed his Pilot training in Stockton California before being stationed at Hickam Field in May of 1941. Dad told us that the morning the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor that he and his buddies were up early just beginning a round of golf. He said that they heard "a big commotion" and realized they had better return to base. He said "everything was blown to smitherins". There was very little they could do. Some new planes were delivered to them later that morning and he said he and others flew out in them to hunt for the Japanese. It was too late.
